Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

Happy Spring!  We congratulate Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the newly elected Pope Francis.  Pope Francis stated in his homily, “Let us be protectors of creation, protectors of God’s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment.” The month of April we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of Care for God’s Creation which is very appropriate as Earth Day is also celebrated during April.

A special thanks to the parents, volunteers, faculty, and students that made our mission day a great success.  We raised $395. for the Honor Flight Network that honors American veterans for their sacrifices.  Representatives from the Rochester Chapter will be at the school on Thursday, March 28th to accept the check.  The presentation will be held during morning prayers at 9AM in the school.  All are invited; please call the school office if you are attending.

   All Volunteers,

Since 2002 the Diocese of Rochester has conducted background checks and training for volunteers and paid staff through either its Creating a Safe Environment (CASE) program (volunteers) or Safe and Sacred Program (paid staff).  The Diocese is preparing to audit all schools files.  We need to make sure all of our volunteers are in compliance with this Diocesan requirement.  All of St. Michael School paid staff is in compliance.  This requirement protects our children.

The verification of the form is done by checking one’s birthday by a valid driver’s license, birth certificate, or passport.  Volunteers (age 18 and older) who need initial training; please use the following:

USERNAME:               IT20

PASSWORD:               rochester (yes, all lower case letters)

Individuals that were previously trained and need to be recertified (certificate date prior to 2008); please use the following:

USERNAME:               CR20

PASSWORD:               volunteer (yes, all lower case letters)

There is an online exam at the end of the training; once you complete the training and pass the exam a certificate will print out with your name on it.  Please make sure when you start the training you enter the correct information so your name will appear on the certificate.  In the event your name does not appear on the certificate, please print out a blank certificate and print out your exam that should show your passing score and name.  Please provide a copy of this certificate to Ms. Erika Holland in the school office.  For further information you may check the Diocese of Rochester website at http://www.dor.org/index.cfm/safe-environment/.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

The students are enjoying celebrating Catholic Schools Week.  The crazy hats, crazy hair, crazy socks, slippers, and sports uniforms are a true delight to see.  The students are reminded of the value of their Catholic education and are truly grateful to the many individuals involved with their education from parents, volunteers, staff, faculty, Grandparents, alumni, and friends of St. Michael School.  We thank you for all that you do for our students.

The second semester has already begun.  Report cards were sent home on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.  It is hard to believe the school year is already half over.

Again, a friendlyreminder to all parents and guardians- If your child is absent from school, please provide a written excuse for your child when they return to school.  Please note the date(s) your child was absent and the reason for the absence.  New York State Department of Education requires us to maintain these records. If no written excuse is provided, it is viewed and recorded as an unexcused absence.  We thank you for your cooperation.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

The can food drive is one way we can help care for the less fortunate. Our goal is to collect 700 non-perishable food items by Friday, December 14.  Children may bring non-perishable food items to the school for the food drive.  The first grade students are sorting and counting the food items in blocks of ten.

The month of December we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of Call to Family, Community, and Participation.  During the month of January we will focus on the Life and Dignity of the Human Person.

Sunday, December 2, started the season of Advent in preparation of Jesus birth.  We encourage families to keep the true meaning of Christmas alive in their homes and hearts.  We pray daily around our advent wreath that is battery-operated because schools are not allowed to have open candle flames.

We thank all the students that participated in the weekend masses on December 8-9.  Also, we extend a special thank you to all the individuals that contributed to the second collection that weekend.  It is from your generosity that we continue to provide a solid Christian education to our students- our future leaders.

Please note that our Christmas concert is on Thursday, December 20 at 6:30 PM.  Come and join in on your favorite Christmas songs!  While you are there, check out the students’ science fair projects on display in the church hall.

We are in need of baked goods and supplies for the refreshment table after the Christmas Concert. Starting in February we will have a Keuka College Education Major senior available for tutoring after school on Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3-5PM.  We encourage students and parents to sign up for this free service that will continue through early May-subject to availability of the college student.

The can food drive is one way we can help care for the less fortunate. Our goal is to collect 700 non-perishable food items by Friday, December 14.  Children may bring non-perishable food items to the school for the food drive.

The month of December we will focus on the Catholic Social Teaching of Call to Family, Community, and Participation.

Sunday, December 2, started the season of Advent in preparation of Jesus birth.  We encourage families to keep the true meaning of Christmas alive in their homes and hearts.  We pray daily around our advent wreath that is battery-operated because schools are not allowed to have open candle flames.

The Yates County Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring a Pancake Day on Friday, December 7 at St. Michael Church Hall.   They will serve lunch between 11AM until 1:30 PM.  The lunch price for St. Michael School students is $2.00 per child.  The event is also open in the evening from 4:30-7:00PM for twenty dollars ($20) per family, seven dollars ($7) per adult and four dollars ($4) per child ages 5-12.

The second collection, the weekend masses of December 9, is for St. Michael School.  We thank you for your generosity.  It is from your generosity that we continue to provide a solid Christian education to our students- our future leaders.

Students are needed at all of the masses around Our Lady of the Lakes on December 8 and 9 as greeters, ushers, choir members, readers, altar servers, gift bearers, etc. to represent the school for the second collection. A sign-up sheet has been sent home. If you need another, please contact Erika Holland.

There is a PTO Meeting at St. Michael School on Tuesday, December 11 from 7 to 8 PM. Please come and participate!

You are always welcome to join us at daily morning prayer at 9 AM.  We pray and sing as a faith and school community and it is a great way to start the day.  Also, you are always welcome at our monthly school mass, the next school mass is Tuesday, December 11 at 11:00 AM.

Please note that our Christmas concert is on Thursday, December 20 at 6:30 PM.  Come and join in on your favorite Christmas songs.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

We extend a Blessed Thanksgiving to everyone.  Please enjoy the opportunity to spend time with family and friends.  We are all thankful for the many gifts God has blessed us with here at St. Michael School.  Please have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

It is almost here-the Finger Lakes Realty 5K Fun Run on Thanksgiving morning, November 22.  We extend a warm invitation to all community members, alumni, school community members, and any interested individuals.  This is a great opportunity to build up a huge appetite for your family meal and have a good time as well. There is a blog site for this event and is available at www.stmikesrun.wordpress.com.  The committee would like to serve and sell pies at the event.  Please consider making or buying a pie for support of St. Michael School. Pies may be dropped off at Stork Insurance on Wednesday, November 21.  A special thanks to the committee working hard on the preparations for this event.

The following is some information from Mrs. Erika Stork, Turkey Trot Chairperson, in regard to parking and road closures on the day of the Turkey Trot.   “We've been getting some questions if parking on Keuka Street for the Turkey Trot will be allowed.  I wanted to let everyone know I spoke with local authorities and we will be closing Keuka Street the morning of the racefrom the school to the end of Keuka Street up by the Academy.  Local traffic only will be permitted (people who live on the street).  Church-goers for the 8 AM mass will still be able to turn onto Keuka Street and park in the back church parking lot with no problems.  This will also make the Kids Fun Run easier and safer since the kids can run in the road because the sidewalk is really bumpy.”

Pre-Registration for the Turkey Trot is Tuesday, November 20 from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM at St. Michael School, Tuesday, November 20 from 4:00-6:00 PM at Stork Insurance, and Wednesday, November 2 from 11:30 AM-6:00 PM at Stork Insurance.  Stork Insurance is located at 136 Main Street, Penn Yan, N.Y.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

We wish a happy All Saints Day to everyone.  Last week we celebrated Healthy Heroes Week.  Today we celebrate some heroes of our faith - saints.  We will especially remember souls of the faithful departed and family members of St. Michael School Community over the past 131 years on All Souls Day, November 2, 2012.

The Halloween parade inside the school was a total delight to witness.  During morning announcements we talked about Halloween safety tips.

A special thank you to all the individuals that volunteered during last week’s Healthy Heroes activities.  The entire school community enjoyed Zumba, bike ride or walk, and students creating and performing their own healthy hero skits.  The students performed their skits for the entire school.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

Welcome to autumn.  The fourth annual Autumn Dinner Circle welcome reception is this Saturday, October 13 at 6:15 P.M. at St. Michael Church Hall. Individuals will then proceed to their dinner locations for great food and fellowship. This is a fundraising event for St. Michael School.  Individuals may either host a dinner or join in as a guest at one of the many local dinner circles.   A donation of $50.00 per person is requested and more information is available by calling the school or Gloria Long at (315) 536-7820.

The faculty had performed a Community Service Project on Tuesday, October 9 by helping with the Food for the Needy Program here in Penn Yan.  It was a great opportunity to pay back to our community.   Earlier in the day we attended daily mass and we enjoyed lunch at Milly’s Pantry in the Pinwheel Market.  We also toured the facility.  This is an excellent program in our community and it was truly our honor to help in a small way.

We extend a special call to any and all Veterans to come and join us for a special Veteran Day celebration on Friday, November 9, at 11 A.M. at our flag pole (weather permitting).  Please call the office so that we may be prepared for your visit.  I have an all day meeting on that date so Dr. Jim Tette, Retired St. Michael School Principal, will attend on my behalf.  Fr. Stan will join in the ceremony, too.  I also have a call to Mr. Dave Paddock, Retired St. Michael School Principal, asking for his assistance as well.

We are looking for an art teacher, especially an individual certified by NYS Department of Education.  Please have any interested candidates forward their resume, cover letter, three references, and copy of their NYS Certification to my attention.  To date, I have received a few applications and will start the interview process soon.  Mrs. Pat Lampson has agreed to currently run the art program.

The Diocese of Rochester Catholic Schools Partners Fall 2012 Newsletter is also being sent home today.  This publication comes out twice a year and reinforces the partnership that families and schools have in educating young people.

The results of the drawing for the Innisbrook raffle prizes (displayed at the Back to School night) are on the reverse side of this newsletter.  We appreciate all the effort that parents and children placed into this fundraiser.  The final totals are being calculated. We know we did exceed last year’s total and we do extend a thank you to everyone involved.  Although it appears we did not meet our goal, we earned over five thousand dollars for the arts program.

A couple of note items on the school calendar: Monday, April 29, 2013 there is no school for Penn Yan Schools or St. Michael School.   The conference day scheduled for Monday, May 6, 2013 is a regular school day.

The PTO is sponsoring a Movie Night.  The Lorax movie will be shown here in the school.  Refreshments will be for sale as well.  The movie is scheduled for Saturday, October 27th with show time at 6:30 P.M.

A few reminders:

Individual school pictures were taken today, Thursday, October 11.  The school-wide picture will be taken on Friday, October 12.  Please have your child (ren) wear their regular school uniform.

Band lessons are held on Mondays and the students will be pulled from their regular classes.  The first band lesson will be on Monday, October 15.

The Finger Lakes Realty 5K Fun Run is planned for Thanksgiving morning, November 22.  We extend a special thank you to Finger Lakes Realty and others for sponsoring this event.  This is a great opportunity to build up a great appetite for your family meal and have a good time as well. There is a blog site for this event and is available at www.stmikesrun.wordpress.com.   A special thanks to the committee working hard on the preparations for this event.

The month of October we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of Rights and Responsibilities.  We remind students that they have responsibilities here at school and responsibilities at home and within the community.

We thank you for your continued support and prayers for St. Michael School Community.

God Bless,

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

Welcome to autumn.  We extend a special belated Yom Kipper to our Jewish friends and neighbors.  We talked about Yom Kipper and Rosh Hashanah during morning announcements on those Jewish Holy Days.  We want our students to have a good understanding of the many faiths and cultures that exist here in Penn Yan and within our Country.

The fourth annual Autumn Dinner Circle fundraiser event welcome reception is Saturday, October 13 at 6:15 P.M. at St. Michael Church Hall. Individuals will then proceed to their dinner locations for great food and fellowship. This is a fundraising event for St. Michael School.  Individuals may either host a dinner or join in as a guest at one of the many local dinner circles.   A donation of $50.00 per person is requested and more information is available by calling the school or Gloria Long at (315) 536.7820.

We extend a special call to any and all Veterans to come and join us for a special Veteran Day celebration on Friday, November 9, at 11A.M.at our flag pole (weather permitting).  Please call the office so that we may be prepared for your visit.

We are looking for an art teacher, especially an individual certified by NYS Department of Education.  Please have any interested candidates forward their resume, cover letter, three references, and copy of their NYS Certification.  Our teachers are required to be certified just like the public school teachers.  All of our teachers are either certified or working toward their certification.  I also hold both administrative and several teaching endorsements here in New York.  As you may know, our students also take the regular NYS grade level standardized tests in grades 3-5.  We follow many of the same requirements as the public schools.

A few reminders:

Parents and Guardians, if you have not done so already, please complete and return the forms found in the Parent/Student Handbook: Model Release Form (page 16), Pesticide Application Policy (page 18), and Receipt of Parent-Student Handbook (page 20). You may list all of your children on each form so you do not have to complete multiple forms.

Parents and Guardians, please call Mrs. Erika Holland, Administrative Assistant, by 9:00 A.M. if your child is absent, arriving late, or leaving early on any particular day.

Please remember the students will be out of school from Friday, October 5 through Tuesday, October 9 and return to school on Wednesday, October 10.   The faculty is performing a Community Service Project on Tuesday, October 9 and will be helping the Food for the Needy Program here in Penn Yan as an opportunity to pay back to our community.  Have a save and happy Columbus Day weekend.

Individual school pictures will be taken on Thursday, October 11 with a school-wide picture taken on Friday, October 12.  Please have your child (ren) wear their regular school uniforms on both days.

Band lessons are held on Mondays and the students will be pulled from their regular classes.  The first band lesson will be on Monday, October 15.

We are finishing up with the Innisbrook Sales Program and have set our school net income at $6,500.00 to help cover the cost of the arts. Last year we netted four thousand dollars.  The Innisbrook event has been extended through Sunday evening for internet sales.   Students were awarded prizes during morning announcements.  Any additional prizes, if qualified, will be sent to the students in their student packets.

The Finger Lakes Realty 5K Fun Run is planned for Thanksgiving morning, November 22.  We extend a special thank you to Finger Lakes Realty for sponsoring this event.  This is a great opportunity to build up a great appetite for your family meal and have a good time as well.  Congratulations are extended to fifth grader Maddie Flynn who designed the t-shirt logo for the event (see reverse side).

The month of October we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of Rights and Responsibilities.  Discussions of these social teachings are taking place in the classroom and during morning announcements.  A bulletin board display in the school reminds all of us of the Social Teachings.  The month of November we will focus on Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, especially appropriate during Thanksgiving Food Drives.

We thank you for your continued support and prayers for St. Michael School Community.   God Bless,        Jim Toner

As stated in our last newsletter, we are setting our school net income goal for the Innisbrook Sales Program, which includes wrapping paper and other items, at $6,500.00 to help cover the cost of the arts. Last year we netted four thousand dollars.  Our students need your help.  We thank you for your involvement with your child (ren)’s education.

This month of September we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of the Life and Dignity of the Human Person.  In October, we will focus on Rights and Responsibilities.  Discussions of these social teachings are taking place in the classroom and during morning announcements.

The Penn Yan Central School District will continue to cater our hot lunch program for our students.  The cost is $2.50 per child per day.  The hot meals will be the same items served to the public school children.  Milk is also available for an additional $.25 per student per day. We need to purchase milk directly from a separate vendor.  Each milk option costs a separate amount with the average being $.25 per carton per day.

As stated in our last newsletter, the Penn Yan School Board, at their September 5th meeting, approved of two additional half days for this school year.  The two days are Monday, September 24th and Monday, October 29th.  Both of these days are for professional staff development.  A copy of the letter I received from Mr. Hamilton, Superintendent of Penn Yan Schools, is on the reverse side of this letter.  The day care facility will be open immediately after school until 5:30 PM.  Students should either bring their own lunch or $2.50 cash for pizza.  A sign up sheet is in the Activity Center.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

The school year is well under way.  The students are very involved in their classrooms with praying, learning, and sharing.  It is a total delight to watch the teachers and students interact with each other in an engaging environment.

We extend a happy belated grandparents’ day to our Grandparents.  Grandparent’s day was Sunday, September 9, 2012.  The school community sang happy birthday to the Blessed Mother on Friday, September 7th.  Mother Mary’s birthday, the Nativity of the Blessed Mother was September 8th.  Yesterday, September 12, 2012 we honored the Most Holy Name of Mary.

We are interviewing for a Music Teacher and a Spanish Teacher for the 2012-13 school year.  Also, some grant funding for our art program has been lost but we are working hard to maintain the same level of instruction and involvement with the program.  The arts is a vital part of our educational program here at St. Michael School.  The students’ opportunity to express themselves through art is very important.  We are recommending our school net income goal for the Innisbrook Sales Program that includes wrapping paper and other items be set at $6,500.00 to help cover the cost of the arts. Last year we netted four thousand dollars.  Our students need your help.  We thank you for your involvement with your child (ren)’s education.

The Turkey Trot art contest, conducted by the PTO is underway.  A few entries have already been submitted.  This 5k Fun Run is planned for Thanksgiving morning.  This is a great opportunity to build up a great appetite for your family meal.  The PTO is planning a pot luck dinner on Friday, September 28th-details to follow.

This month of September we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of the Life and Dignity of the Human Person.  In October, we will focus on Rights and Responsibilities.  Please be patient as we develop this program.  Our special prayer service on September 11th honored the human lives lost on that tragic day.  The School Community honored our first responders as we recalled the eleventh anniversary.   The 9:00 AM School Prayer Service was attended by several local first responders and Pastor Father Stan.  A special thanks to the Johnson Costello American Legion Post #355, Penn Yan; they donated American flags for the students.

The Penn Yan Central School District will continue to cater a hot lunch program for our students.  The cost is $2.50 per child per day.  The hot meals will be the same items served to the public school children.  Milk is also available for an additional $.25 per student per day.  Again, we are still in need for lunch and recess volunteers; please call the school office if you can help.

The Penn Yan School Board at their September 5th meeting approved of two additional half days for this school year.  The two days are Monday, September 24th and Monday, October 29th.  Both of these days are for professional staff development.  We follow the Penn Yan School District calendar as they bus most of our students to and from school.  An updated calendar is on the back side of this letter.

Again, thank you to all those who contributed to the second collection at Our Lady of the Lakes Parish Community for St. Michael School over Labor Day Weekend.  The collection total was six thousand two hundred eighteen dollars ($6,218.25).  We thank you for your generosity and prayers.

A reminder- Back to School Night is on Wednesday, September 26 between 6-7PM.  Teachers will be in their classrooms to meet and greet and define their classroom expectations.  Please also join us for our first monthly school mass on Friday, September 28th at 11 AM in St. Michael Church.  We will honor the feast day of our patron saint; St. Michael.  The actual feast day of St. Michael is Saturday, September 29th.

August 14 Letter to School Community

Aug 28, 2012

August 14, 2012

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

I hope and pray that you are having a relaxing and safe summer vacation.  The half way point of school summer vacation was just a couple of days ago.   Summer goes so fast but it is certainly a great time to enjoy family, friends, and the outdoors.  Today is the completion of my first week as School Principal and I am delighted to join the St. Michael’s School Community as we continue on our faith journey together.  I look forward to meeting and working with the families, staff/faculty, and especially the children; as we provide Christian witness to our community and our world.  I invite you to stop by and say hello.

Let me introduce myself.  Irecently served as a Business Faculty Member at EBI Career College in Vestal New York.  Previously I was Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Athletic and Activity Program Coordinator with Broome County Catholic Charities.  My fifteen years of teaching experience include working with students from kindergarten through adult learners including several years with the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia Catholic Schools.  I also worked as Director of Youth/Student Activities in combination with my teaching roles.  I hold many administrative and teaching endorsements in New York and other states.

I had the opportunity to meet several children in the school during the school tour of the interview process and recently during the summer enrichment program.  I am honored to have an influence on their lives and help you develop them into being responsible Christians Witnesses and Examples.

Mr. Dave Paddock retired after three years of faithful service to our School Community Family.  Dave, like many of you, is enjoying the Olympic Games.  He witnessed the games first hand in London, England.  Mr. Paddock cheered on our USA teams in their events.

Mrs. Connie Murphy, School’s Administrative Assistant, will also retire at the end of August.  Connie served the school for six years and will certainly be missed by everyone. I chaired the selection committee that selected a new Administrative Assistant, Erica Holland.  She will begin later this month.  Also, Mrs. Paulina Garcia-Reid, Spanish Teacher worked on a volunteer basis with our students.  She will be devoting full time to her business.  The SMS family wishes her well and thanks her for her dedicated service.  I am investigating a replacement for her skillful teaching talent.

Please stay safe and continue to enjoy your summertime.  The 2012-13 School Year is approaching fast.  The first day of school is Tuesday, September 4, 2012.

God Bless,

August 27 letter to School Community

Aug 28, 2012

 August 27, 2012

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of Saint Michael School (SMS),

Thank you for welcoming me with open arms here at St. Michael’s School and the Penn Yan Community.  As I meet individuals throughout the local neighborhood; I come to realize how many people are connected to the St. Michael’s School Community-a tradition of over 130 years.

First out I would like to thank all the individuals involved with the fifteenth annual St. Michael’s School Golf Tournament.  The committee presented the school a check in the amount of approximately $11,500.  One hundred forty golfers enjoyed the perfect golf weather-sunny and blue skies.  Many participants won door prizes with all available teachers present and active in the day’s activities.  The sponsors, almost one hundred in total, were greatly appreciated for their support and participation in the event.  Fr. Stan and Fr. Jack participated in the tournament among countless others.

I have met several educators from the Penn Yan Central School District.  They are very interested in our children continuing to be successful in their educational endeavors.  Parents and Guardians-I am grateful that you have placed your child (ren) here at St. Michael’s School.  I recognize there are some educational options available and am pleased that you have the confidence and trust in the St. Michael’s Faculty and Staff. We, faculty, staff, and students, will share in our faith and academic journey together.  All of the teachers here are either New York State Certified or working toward their certification and most of us have our Master’s Degree.

On the reverse side of this letter is the school calendar for 2012-13 school year.  St. Michael’s School generally follows the Penn Yan Central School District (PYCSD) Calendar.  Please remember that if PYCSD is closed or delayed due to weather or road conditions, St. Michael’s School follows suit; please check local TV and/or radio stations.

The kindergarten open house was Monday August 20th and I had the opportunity to meet many of the children and their parents.  I enjoyed eating snacks with the children and the children were using their creative talents and skills on arts and craft activities.  The PTO met on Tuesday, August 21 and members have incredible enthusiasm and spirit for the school and plans for upcoming events.  Please get involved with their events and thank them for to their ideas and events.  Their next meeting is Tuesday, September 11th at 7PM.

I would like to invite you to volunteer in your child (ren)’s school.  Volunteers are vital to the success of the students and our school.  Enclosed is information about our SMS Family Obligation fundraising activity.  As you may know, all Diocesan employees and volunteers must complete the required Creating a Safe Environment Training.  This training is to protect all children.  This training is available online at http://ec.dor.org with the username:  IT20 and the password:  rochester.  Please print out the certificate, keep a copy and submit a copy to the school office.  Volunteers are needed for lunch and recess duty, silent reading time, front desk coverage, special events and fund raising activities, receptions, class level volunteers, and other areas.

Please stay safe and continue to enjoy your last few days of summer.  The 2012-13 School Year is approaching fast.  The first day of school is Tuesday, September 4, 2012.

God Bless,
