Yearbook

The early drafts of the yearbook look great; you don’t want to miss having one for your child. Last week, Erika sent a notice home about orders.   If you haven’t remembered to return the order form, please do so soon as we need to know the number of copies to print.

Brain Boosters

We are still looking for interest in the Brain Boosters program this summer. Brain Boosters is a two week education program provided by teachers at St. Michael School. The program runs Monday-Thursday from 9-12. Cost is $100 per child. There are 2 classes, a lower level (ages 5-7) and an upper level (ages 8-12). A second teacher will serve as an aide in the class, and as the PE teacher. The program provides exciting and challenging activities throughout the two weeks. Please let us know soon so that we can begin to further plan the program.

SCHOOL NEWS:

The annual oratorical contest among fifth grade students was held this week. The students were asked to speak on the topic of “In what way does being in nature help me know and become closer to God?” The winners are Riley Potts, Amelia Conlon, and Kayla Olsen.  Thanks to the judging panel of Kathy Waye, Matthew Stork, and John Christensen, who thought all the speeches were very good.

A glimpse of the Mathematics program can be found in the third grade where students are working on equivalent fractions, and on word problems that require them to figure out what mathematical options to use to solve the problem.

Dear St. Michael School Community:

We began our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday -a Liturgical season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving to help us deepen our relationship with Christ. Ashes were distributed to the students during morning prayers.

Students received Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowls as a way to be generous to the less fortunate by considering a financial contribution. We ask that the rice bowls be returned to school by Thursday, April 10 or at Mass on Palm Sunday. Catholic Relief Services assists over 100 million people annually.

Dear St. Michael School Community:

SaintMichael Schooland all Diocese of Rochester Catholic Schools have implemented the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.  This program defines “bullying: as when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending him or herself.”  There are three key components:

a.       Involves an aggressive behavior

b.       Typically involves a pattern repeated over time.

c.        Imbalance of power or strength.

SaintMichael Schoolhas established the following school rules:

1.       We will be kind to others.

2.       We will try to help students who are bullied

3.       We will try to include students who are left out.

4.       If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

This program will help students deal with bullies wherever they encounter them.

Dear St. Michael School Community:

The Most Reverend Salvatore Matano, Bishop of Rochester, came and concelebrate the 9:30 Mass this past weekend along with Fr. Jack O’Connor.  His homily talked the dedication and hard work of parents and the blessing of faith instilled into young people lives through St. Michael School.  Bishop Matano then assisted with the Knights of Columbus breakfast by serving food to those in attendance.

Bishop Matano selected this visit because of the warm welcoming cards and letters sent by St. Michael School students.  In his thank-you response to our school community, Bishop Matano wrote, “Thank you for the beautiful letters of welcome which I truly enjoyed reading.  Such a gracious welcome is a great encouragement…”  I invited him to come visit us any time and he stated he would like to return and celebrate a School Mass someday.

Bishop Matano visits St. Michael Church

Jan 14, 2014

St. Michael’s School and Church community welcomed two very special guests last Sunday.

The Most Rev. Salvatore R. Matano, the newly installed Bishop of the Diocese of Rochester and his assistant, Father Daniel White, concelebrated Mass with Father Jack O’Connor.

The Bishop’s visit was prompted by the many letters and cards from the students at St. Michael’s School welcoming him to the Diocese. Bishop Matano’s message during Sunday’s homily honored all families and parents, stating that it is the Church’s role to support parents who teach their children about Jesus.

He was especially supportive of St. Michael’s School, citing that Jesus is welcome in every classroom and every subject that is taught. After Mass, Bishop Matano spoke with parishioners as they were leaving church and, acting as a true servant, helped the Knights of Columbus dish out eggs and pancakes at their monthly breakfast fundraiser for charity. As he circulated around the Church Hall, he personally spoke to everyone in attendance and posed for a photo with several St. Michael’s School students, teachers, and Principal Jim Toner.

Dear Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s) of St. Michael School Students,

As you probably know, the Diocese of Rochester welcomed and installed a new Bishop on Friday, January 3, 2014.  I received word today that The Most Reverend Salvatore Matano, Bishop of Rochester, will come and concelebrate a Mass this weekend. Bishop Matano will concelebrate Mass along with Fr. Jack O’Connor on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 9:30 AM at St. Michael Church.

Bishop Matano has selected this visit because of the warm welcoming cards and letters sent by St. Michael School students.  In his thank-you response to our school community, Bishop Matano wrote, “Thank you for the beautiful letters of welcome which I truly enjoyed reading.  Such a gracious welcome is a great encouragement.  Once I begin my apostolic ministry, I look forward to visiting St. Michael School.”

I have invited all the students to come and welcome our new Bishop to this mass and wear their school uniforms.  Families of all faiths are always welcome and encouraged to attend.  We gather together to thank God for all of our gifts and blessings just like our monthly School Masses.

I extend a special thank you to all of you for sharing your special gifts and talents of your child (ren) with our St. Michael School Community.

                                                God Bless You,

Governor Cuomo and lawmakers are very close to approving legislation that would generate an additional $150 million in scholarships to help families pay tuition. Unfortunately, lobbyists from the public schools teachers' unions strongly oppose the legislation and instead are urging lawmakers to fund only public schools. Tuition-paying families need and deserve their fair share.

Please take a moment to send a message to the Governor and your elected state legislators urging them to enact the Education Investment Tax Credit proposal.

Dear St. Michael School Community:

We continue to celebrate the advent season and prepare for the coming of Jesus birthday.  This advent season we focused on the different themes for each week-hope, peace, joy, and faith.  As we continue through the last days of advent let us celebrate our gift of faith.  Our faith encourages us to do outreach to our community.

A special thank you is extended to everyone that contributed to the canned food drive. The school community collected over five hundred items for the needy.  This community outreach program encourages us to be generous and remember the less fortunate. The students will decorate me like a Christmas tree as an award for exceeding the goal for this drive.

We thank people who have contributed to the Thanksgiving appeal and the recent second church collection.  Your continued support and prayers are appreciated.

We wish everyone a Blessed and Merry Christmas.

We continue to celebrate the advent season and prepare for the coming of Jesus birthday.  Every morning we begin our day with morning prayer and during this season we will also “light” the advent wreath (the candles are battery operated).  This second week of advent focuses on the theme of peace.

All of you should have received our Thanksgiving appeal letter.  Please read the letter carefully and thank you for your generosity and prayers for St. Michael School.

Dear St. Michael School Community:

Welcome to the advent season and the beginning of a new liturgical year.  Every morning we begin our day with morning prayer and during this season we will also” light” the advent wreath (the candles are battery operated).  The first week of advent focuses on the theme of hope.

A special thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers, participants, and spectators of our second annual Turkey Trot.  Five hundred and six (506) runners participated and over fifty St. Michael School students ran in the child’s fun run!
